Political gadfly Jack Roeser can be too strident for my taste, but his op-ed on the Illinois Leader site, “Time for Topinka to Step Down”, is IMHO 100 percent on the mark. In the wake of the evanescence of yet another fill-in for the GOP Senate nomination, the state Republican chaircritter has plenty of reasons to make the happy dispatch:
Topinka’s enmity toward Senator Peter Fitzgerald has been palpable. It’s clear that the discouraging lack of support from party elites was a major reason behind his decision not to run for reelection.
This is not surprising. The Illinois GOP establishment is very much the political façade that the Trib’s John Kass calls the “bi-partisan combine.” Others have labeled it “the culture of political sleaze.”
By [recommending the appointment of] an aggressive, independent U.S. Attorney, Senator Fitzgerald forever won the disdain of the aptly named ‘George Ryan wing’ of the Republican Party. Because of the indictments of so many of that wing, he is the target of their retribution. . . .
When unproven allegations were revealed in Jack Ryan’s divorce/custody records, Topinka’s lack of support doomed his candidacy. Most grown-ups saw this matter for what it was, a media-generated attack with no real substance or relevancy.
Ironically, most of the very same people that were “shocked, shocked!” by what was revealed at no point were embarrassed by the corruption surrounding George Ryan. . . .
Topinka dumped Jack Ryan with no backup plan.
Four weeks after Jack Ryan announced he was pulling out of the race, there is still no replacement and the atmosphere has turned circus-like. Clearly, it’s time for a change.
No wonder such exciting personalities as Mike Ditka want nothing to do with being slated by this Republican leadership team! After what happened to MacDougal, Peter Fitzgerald and Jack Ryan, who would trust these people?
Indeed.
