European anti-Americanism has been a persistent hindrance to the War on Terror. A lot of people across the water think that the United States is as serious a menace as, if not worse than, al-Qa’eda. And it’s not hard to figure out why, when one looks at what their leftist-dominated media tell them day after day. Davids Medienkritik illustrates the point with a collage of German magazine covers proclaiming that George W. Bush’s morally bankrupt America threatens the world with its “Blood for Oil” fundamentalist crusade.
It is heartening, then, to read this item in the OpinionJournal Political Diary (subscription only, but a bargain at $3.95 a month):
Today, Germany’s best-selling newspaper, Bild, with 12 million readers, advocated the re-election of Mr. Bush. Newspaper endorsements are rare in Germany – in 2002 only a few leading papers endorsed a candidate in the German election. Polls show that 85% of Germans prefer John Kerry, but Bild defied public opinion and offered a list of reasons ranging from free trade to terrorism for why Mr. Bush deserves a second term. Not only is Mr. Bush confronting Muslim extremists more vigorously than Mr. Kerry likely would, the paper noted. But if President Bush remains in office, Germany would be under less pressure to send troops to Iraq (presumably because Germans have gotten word that John Kerry’s “secret” plan is to threaten to walk away unless Europe gets involved).
“Every new American government makes its mistakes,” reads the endorsement. “Bush has already made his. Kerry, by contrast, has never held an executive office. He would be poorly prepared for the job, worse than most presidents beforehim. . . . With Bush we know what we’re getting. With Kerry, no one knows what he stands for and where he’s going to lead America.”
I suspect that quite a few other Europeans feel the same way but have been deterred from admitting it, perhaps even to themselves, by the stifling anti-Americanism all around them. We can hope that Bild’s defiance of euro-conformity will be emulated elsewhere.
Update (10/28/04): Davids Medienkritik has the text of the Bild endorsement.
