Word has just come of the death of Los Angeles science fiction fan Michael Mason, 42. His body was found in his apartment after friends told local authorities that he had not been seen for several days. Aside from that, no information is yet available about the time or cause of death. He was, like many fans, a trifle overweight but seemed to be in normal health when I saw him last month at SMOFCon.
Active in fandom since his teens, when he began attending conventions in order to add to his book collection, Michael chaired Loscon 30 (2003), the last Loscon at the Burbank Airport Hilton. Hour 25 interviewed him during the con. He worked in virtually every Loscon department over the years, was three times vice chairman and co-headed programming in 2004. He was also active in the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society, where he served on the board of directors, was head librarian and coordinated the annual LASFS Christmas party.
About Michael’s private life I know nothing at all. I do know that he was an enjoyable conversationalist, very knowledgeable about SF literature and an energetic party giver. He was not well known outside the L.A. area, but all of fandom, whether it knows it or not, will miss him.
very sad story. rest in peace.
