Boris Johnson is both a journalistic celebrity and the U.K. Conservative Party’s spokesman on higher education. It is therefore beyond appalling to learn, via Melanie Phillips, that he combines historical illiteracy with moral equivalence:
I was watching Boris Johnson’s BBC2 TV programme The Dream of Rome this evening, marvelling at his re-invention in yet another new guise as telly presenter, when I nearly fell out of my armchair having heard him say that the Christians who martyred themselves for their faith under the Romans were the equivalent of modern Islamic suicide bombers. [emphasis added]
As Miss Phillips goes on to note, there is a modicum of difference between being executed for refusal to renounce Christ and blowing up bystanders in the hopes of frightening the survivors into acquiescing in theocratic tyranny. Yet a highly cultured soi disant “conservative” casually ignores the distinction.
Is it any wonder that the Islamofascists expect to prevail?
