Holding the government of Iraq “accountable” is the latest enthusiasm on Capitol Hill. The concept is that Baghdad should be required to do a great many Good Things –
According to La Generalissima, her approach “will fully fund the troops, honor our commitment to our veterans, hold the Iraqi government accountable and end the war”. Notice what’s missing? She refrains from so much as lip service to making progress in reining in terrorism. Her phraseology is, in fact, preposterous. An American bug-out from Iraq won’t “end the war”, either in that country or around the world. One might as well say that General Meade could have “ended the war” by retreating from Gettysburg.
The premise behind the “accountability” mantra is that our goal in Iraq is to put into place the principles and practice of good government. True enough, that is something that we would like to do, but it is not an end it itself; it is a means to the end of administering a stinging defeat to the mufsidun. We are fighting for ourselves and all of civilization, not just for the civilized core of the population of Mesopotamia. A peaceful, prosperous, well-governed Iraq will be a valuable ally in the War on Terror. It doesn’t follow that, should our dearest hopes be disappointed, the alternative is to give up. A factious, terror-plagued Iraq where the enemy suffers steady attrition of men and materiel is better than one that triumphant Islamofascists can claim as a famous victory.
