The text was “Barack has chosen Senator Joe Biden to be our VP nominee”, but the subtext of the 3:00 a.m. (coincidence?) IM was, “We’ve got no idea what we’re doing.”
The Obama campaign’s Vice Presidential gimmick was that his loyal worshippers supporters would be the first to learn whom The One had anointed as His Second. In fact, old-fashioned news organizations reported the story hours earlier. All that the high-tech notification accomplished was to wake up Obamaphiles who don’t turn off their cell phones when they go to bed. They’ll probably blame George W. Bush for their interrupted sleep.
It would have been hard in any event to keep the choice absolutely secret until the official announcement, but the campaign made it impossible when it arranged for a Secret Service detail to be dispatched to Senator Biden’s home late Friday evening. That step could, of course, have been put off till after the announcement. Steps could also have been taken to diffuse media attention,
The Obama operation didn’t even try. Either they were too amateurish to realize that in Washington any secret not actively protected will leak prematurely, or they didn’t really care about keeping their promise that their followers would be “the first to know”. It’s hard not to suspect that the objective was simply to harvest a few million cell phone numbers, which will, I expect, receive many more Obama ads during the next three months.
