The annual recurrence of Earth Hour is quite useful. Some of the lights in my apartment aren’t used frequently. This eco-event is a reminder to switch on everything and check whether any bulbs need replacing. Also an incentive to do laundry and a load of dishes, tasks that I’m prone to put off.
It’s also pleasant to think of all those warriors for Gaia who light candles to replace electrical illumination. For every lumen produced, a burning wick emits vastly more carbon than the electricity that powers a bulb – and it throws off real pollutants, too!
To top it all, the UN looks silly again. Huzzah!
Update: Mission accomplished! Three dead bulbs detected and changed, dishes and laundry begun. Another successful Earth Hour. I wait eagerly for next year.
