Anybody who runs against Lisa Murkowski can count on a contribution from me. The candidate can be Republican, Democrat, Green, Independence, Libertarian, Communist or Fascist. Just not being Lisa is sufficient.
I make this ecumenical offer, because no one with Senatrix Murkowski’s lack of grace deserves to hold public office. Her comment on Sarah Palin’s decision to resign as governor was as classless as they come, to wit, “I am deeply disappointed that the Governor has decided to abandon the State and her constituents before her term has concluded.”
Sure, she was “disappointed”. And, sure, stepping down from office is akin to “abandoning” the State.
I don’t imagine that Governor Palin has much of a political career ahead of her. She’ll be popular, at least for a while, on the right-of-center speaking circuit, but it’s not likely that she’ll escape the “quitter” label, and in time other conservatives will edge into the spotlight. The Republican Presidential nominee in 2012 will be either Mitt Romney or somebody who isn’t yet on anyone’s list (and will, I fearlessly predict, carry forty or more states). At best, Sarah Palin will be Secretary of Energy in his administration.
By then, I hope, Lisa Murkowski will be a private citizen in Anchorage. I’ll do what I can to help her get there.
"no one with Senatrix Murkowski’s lack of grace deserves to hold public office."
The [soon to be] ex-Governor said she was stepping down in order to "advance in another direction", not to better serve her state or for personal reasons. Frustrated with the difficulty of dealing with the media focus she has created for herself, she has decided to abandon her office and go national. Perhaps she imagines that she can take the Nixon route by championing various Congressional Candidates in 2010. That, may I say, would be a consummation devoutly to be wished.
With all that, however, one might ask why an Alaskan who actually voted for her would not be "deeply disappointed that the Governor has decided to abandon the State and her constituents before her term has concluded."
At the very least, any Palin supporter must wonder at her mercurial behavior and apparent willingness to put duty behind ambition. Perhaps, had she spent more time on the business of Alaska and less on feuds with a former son-in-law-nominee, she might not have "suffered" from the "unfair" scrutiny which she claims forced her to vacate her office.
Sadly, I suspect that the citizens' of Alaska's gain will shortly be the nation's loss as fmr-Gov. Palin surfaces as the latest cheerleader on Glenn Back's side show circuit.
