Do you remember what George W. Bush said when his proposed Social Security reforms began to encounter opposition?
As we move forward in the coming weeks, I understand that members of Congress from both parties will want to engage in a vigorous debate and contribute their own ideas. And I welcome those contributions. I welcome any sincere attempts to improve legislation before it reaches my desk. But what I will not accept are attempts to stall, or drag our feet. I will not accept partisan efforts to block reform at any cost.
And do you recall being annoyed by the clear implication that good faith opposition to the President’s program was impossible, that to be against it was to be an insincere partisan? What about the suggestion of impatience with the Constitution itself, a document that gives the legislative branch a more vigorous role than simply perfecting what the executive puts forward?
You remember none of that? Congratulations – your memory is in good working order, for none of it happened.
The quotation is from President Obama’s radio address yesterday about health care reform.
And this mean something because why?????
