Before anybody gets depressed (or enthused) by Ron Paul’s victory in the Conservative Political Action Conference’s Presidential straw poll, it would be a good idea to look at the internals.
Rep. Paul finished comfortably in front, with 31% of the vote, compared to Mitt Romney’s 22% and everybody else’s single digits. The voters were not, however, anywhere near a representative sample of conservatives. Over half (56%) were under age 25; only a quarter (24%) were over 40. Two-thirds (64%) were male.
Those are far from the demographics of conservatism or any other political tendency. What the poll shows is that Ron Paul is still very adept at winning polls with self-selected respondents. During the 2008 primaries, he never translated that skill into more than a negligible share of real votes in real elections. This year, he doesn’t show up as even a blip in polls such Rasmussen. He has as good a chance of rising to, say, 10% as Barack Obama has of sweeping Utah.
No, he is not a Truther.
