Well, ponds. The Wall Street Journal says that, based on new analyses of LCROSS results, the Moon has twice as much water as the Sahara Desert. That’s not waterworld, and the moisture will need much purifying to eliminate such unwanted residues as mercury, but it’s adequate for a substantial lunar base.
In fact, these findings make a permanent human presence on the Moon pretty much inevitable. It will, however, be a Chinese or Indian or Japanese presence. The U.S. is committed to no space goals at all, except perhaps for Not Being Like Bush and showing respect for the Moslem world.
When there’s a Sikh temple at Cabeus Crater, I wonder whether the President of the United States will visit it.
