Rep. Michele Bachmann (R–Minn.) is a much-hated figure in progressive circles, probably the Republican whom left-thinking Democrats would most like to see guillotined. She has now revealed, however, that she was once a Democrat. She and her husband-to-be campaigned for Jimmy Carter while they were in college.
What happened to change her views? She read Burr, one of Gore Vidal’s pseudo-historical novels, the theme of which is the inferiority of the uncouth Founding Fathers to modern, enlightened liberalism.
And from that moment on, I recognized that it was the Republican Party, and conservatives in particular, who really got America – who we are, what we stand for, and are unashamed about the values that the Founders lived and died and shed their blood and their treasure for.
It’s a good thing that we don’t have censorship in America. One of the most powerful forces working in behalf of conservatism is the writings of leftists.
