Colman McCarthy waited till almost the end to indite it, but it’s a topper:
I admire those who join armies, whether America’s or the Taliban’s: for their discipline, for their loyalty to their buddies and to their principles, for their sacrifices to be away from home.
Hey, the Waffen SS had even better discipline and were zealously loyal to their buddies and principles – and being away from home on the Russian Front was tougher than any season in Afghanistan.
Mr. McCarthy is a soi disant pacifist, evidently of the school that opposes war because it regards all causes – Western civilization or murderous terrorism – as equally despicable.
The remainder of his column has been sliced by Jonah Goldberg and diced by Victor Davis Hanson. Max Boot and Tom Maguire stomp on the corpse.
"The difference is that the Taliban, like the Waffen SS, fight by committing atrocities and violating the laws of war."
Which is all very well. But it is also said(by Mr. Goldberg among others) that it is impossible to say, "I support the troops but am opposed to the war." Is everyone who claims this, first saying that American troops are equivalent to the Taliban, and then saying that he still supports them?

Not that this present conflict is the same as slavery; the point is that one can be opposed to what a man fights for without being opposed to him personally.

What's wrong with that? Don't we have the concept of "worthy opponent" anymore. Or can't we accept that a person can have virtues and faults-like say accepting that an enemy can be a vicious barbarian without being a cowardly, vicious barbarian. Should we be sorry that a leftist is not judging people solely by reducing them to what group they belong to? If the speaker says "I support the troops but am opposed to the war", why is that worse then if I say,"I am opposed to slavery but think Confederates were brave".
Me: The difference is that the Taliban, like the Waffen SS, fight by committing atrocities and violating the laws of war.
