Did I consciously decide to put Stromata Blog on hiatus the day after Barack Obama was sworn in for a second term? If so, I don’t recall the mental processes that led to the decision. My impression now is that the blog silently slipped away. I was going to write the next post “tomorrow”, and that tomorrow never came.
If I had kept on blogging, I wonder whether I would – or could – have avoided falling into one of the many pitfalls of idiocy that others have stumbled into during the twilight of Obama, the sturm und drang of Donald Trump and the first, faltering months of whoever is President now. Certainly I would have risked outraging the Trump-deranged or the Trump-infatuated, or both. Worse, my mind might have been snatched by one or the other of those mobs of warring nympholepts.
Nonetheless, I have lately been feeling the impulse to peck at my keyboard again. The Internet has, it is true, grown even more bloody since I drifted off the field. “Second Civil War” is barely hyperbole these days, when, instead of just hurling angry pixels, the denizens of Facebook and Twitter and other such asylums strive to get their enemies silenced or fired from their livelihoods or permanently disgraced, or at the very mildest forced to utter abject apologies for violations of ex post facto laws of netiquette. Maybe I’ll wind up as a figurative corpse limbs akimbo on the battle ground. Still, this isn’t the time for summer soldiers and sunshine patriots. The “war” is metaphorical. Victory or defeat is likely to be real.
This is a welcome surprise! I visited this blog for the first time in many years only two weeks ago, saw there had been no updates, and decided you had lost the taste for blogging or had moved to Twitter. I kept the RSS feed active, though. Just in case.
Looking forward to hearing what you have to say.
