That Andrew Cuomo may be forced out of the governorship of New York is good news for the citizens of that state, as well as for simple morality. Three rousing cheers!
And now, having celebrated the ends, let me condemn the means. The state attorney-general conducted an investigation with no law enforcement purpose. She announced when she issued her damning report that her office would bring no charges against the governor. What she did, then, was use her resources, which are supposed to be devoted to upholding the laws of New York, for opposition research and to assist future lawsuits against her target. That she fairly obviously intends to run for governor herself aggravates the impropriety.
Politicians come and go. Some are malefactors and deserve to be exposed – but not at the cost of abusing the vast powers of government. I’m glad that Cuomo’s appalling behavior has been revealed in a way that makes it impossible for his erstwhile admirers to ignore. I’m sorry that, when the legislature begins impeachment trials, Letitia James won’t also be in the dock.
