According to news reports, President Biden will declare today that the country he leads is not currently a democracy:
“The next few days, when these bills come to a vote, will mark a turning point in this nation,” Biden will say according to prepared remarks shared by the White House. “Will we choose democracy over autocracy, light over shadow, justice over injustice? I know where I stand.”
If Mr. Biden were speaking from exile after a foreign power had occupied the United States, his belief that autocracy, shadow and injustice hold sway over our land would not be surprising. If he were himself a ruthless dictator, his characterization of his own rule would surprise but would have the merit of truth. Yet the United States of America is fully independent, and Joe Biden, whatever his faults, is no Xi Jinping or Vladimir Putin.
Politicians who are out of power not infrequently complain that the Will of the People is being thwarted. (Vide D. J. Trump.) One doesn’t expect that lament from incumbents, save for those who contemplate following in the footsteps of Louis-Napoléon.
