Roscosmos, the Russian Federation’s space agency, has struck back at the United Kingdom in retaliation for the U.K.’s support of Ukraine. Its director-general has announced that a Soyuz launch scheduled for Friday from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, which is to carry 36 OneWeb communications satellites into orbit, will be scrubbed unless OneWeb guarantees that they won’t be used for military purposes and the British government agrees to sell its stake in the company. Britain has turned down the demands.
Separately, Roscosmos denied reports that the hacker group Anonymous has infiltrated and shut down its computer network and declared that interference with its satellites would be a casus belli.
Russia’s leverage is feeble, but these rumblings show that war no longer stays earthbound.
Update (March 22, 2022): Elon Musk soars to the rescue. SpaceX will launch the stranded satellites.
