On August 30, 2021, just before midnight, the last American troops scuttled from Afghanistan, leaving behind at least scores, perhaps hundreds, of American citizens and thousands of Afghans who had assisted our forces and were now marked for vengeance by the Taliban.
Jim Treacher has been patiently counting the number of days that our countrymen have been stranded in the Taliban realm. Today is Day 500. The media have lost interest in their fate. We don’t know how many survive, how many have been murdered, how many of died of disease or starvation, how many linger in captivity.
A quarter century after the end of the Vietnam War, our government was still looking for living MIA’s and recovering the bodies of the dead. The Biden Administration’s search seems to have fizzled after a quarter of a year, if not sooner. Amnesia is now its preferred state of mind.
